Oryt.. In my head i was thinking.. Maybe sailing could possibly let me check on my diet more.. Since id get to eat less processed foods.. But as i get to read more on saiing, it seems as if the case is opposite.. Cruisers gain more weight because of canned & pre-packaged foods!
So, do u agree on that? And what processed foods can u recommend? Or are there actually some food cruisers should stay away from?

i believe we all have different ideas on what healthy foods & lifestyles are. and honestly, it's a bit harder to eat healthier food onboard if you move around alot, but it can be done. what we've done some time ago was to buy seeds & grains & sprout them. it was easy, cheap, & comes with healthy benefits. canned foods do not contain much nutrients. thats why even if we have them on board, we only store them in our bags for emergency.

my opinion is that spending long period of time on board doesnt have any significant impact on someone's diet. 'cause obviously, if you spend long period off shore, u need to compromise & ur diet would mean more processed, packaged, & canned foods. but stil, i doubt if most cruisers spend much of their sailing time "off shore". majority of their time is still spent for island or marina hopping or even coastal cruising!

Wow!! Thank you for your insights! I agree with you. Maybe the first step really is to make and cook most of your own food. Well, i do a lot of cooking & baking at home. But i am also more concerned on the long-term storage of items such as pre-packed food or canned fruits & vegetables..
Hmmmm, westcoast is also right. i dunno. maybe it's a simple as cutting those things out of my diet. im also just trying to find healthier alternatives to keep my diet.
thanks again!!!!

There'll be things you'd have some trouble storing, like meet & cheese, unless ur boat comes w/ a freezer. but canned meats & vegggies are also good. look for canned up versions of meat & make sure there's no added salt nor chemicals. read the labels very carefully. or u also have the option of packing or making ur own canned foods. it's not very hard at all.
again, the bottom line is it still not different from living on land. u can opt for a cruising area that's near the grocery store. or plan ahead & get everyhing u need for a long-term cruising vacation.

Hey everyone! I really like all your ideas. i've actually done some research concerning soups & breads. And i also love the idea of sprouting the seeds because it's so healthy!

You know champagne, when i was living aboard for almost half a year, 3 items saved my sailing lifestyle & diet. First i purchased a burner type stove, more like an over/broiler. It helped me prepare the same quality of food i had ashore. Number 2 is the pressure cooker. It saves 2/3 of my time for cooking & it also helps in preserving the natural nutrients & flavors of my food. Lastly, i had the grill! It's one thing i couldnt do without!

For me, most factors to having a healthy lifestyle revolves much around my cooking. And probably all those that are mentioned here won't do good to anyone unless the cruiser himself knows how to prepare them properly. Simply put, you can just buy a good & health-oriented cookbook somewhere. Read it and practice with the different recipes during your sailing vacation.

Ladies are really concerned about their diet... even they were on sail. I would suggest that no food would be harmful if they come also with prompt exercise and vigorous activities.

I would suggest that you also bring other stuffs to do like playing cards and other things to use your time. Sometimes, people tend to eat more when they have nothing to do.
