We have a 5 yr old lhasa apso and are planning to sail and spend quite some time in Alaska. we're pretty sure carlo, our dog, will be very happy there with his long fur. Do any of you also have winter dogs with thick coats? If yes, then maybe you have some tips to share hehe any advice on how we could keep him warm when we stay in Alaska?

check with his vet and be sure to bring lots of drinking water with you for your dog, he will need that so he wont be dehydrated. If by accident he gets dehydrated during your sail, simply spray him with water using a hose. a dog's tolerance may vary, but remember access to water and a good shade are the keys when you take them to sailing with you.

Hi! Just new in here..interesting discussion captured me...
I go sailing, but I haven't tried bringing my dog when I sail. I didn't know that they can do it, though I know they can swim. but sailing? I can never imagine them doing that. . But with your story, that was really amazing, do I still need to give training to my dog for that or its alright to just prepare the water for them, just like what you said?
Thanks! I would love to bring my dog when I sail next time.

Yes, it's not a problem to take your pets with you when sailing. Just protect them the same way you do at home, only with a few added precautions when sailing. Get them some PFDs or pet flotation device. They work well for dogs, the same way they do for humans. And you can also buy them hypoallergenic sunblocks for pets.

HeY! Thanks for the idea! I was kinda shy with our neighbor everytime I leave our dogs to them when we sail. Next time, I would let them come with us. That would be great!

I also carry my dog during the trip. And I think they can handle the weather. They can keep themseleves warm or cold as neccessary.

The dogs should also have their own place in the boat. Maintaining cleanliness would also require much of works.
