Is the only oil change for an outboard in the lower unit? What type of oil do I need to get for 40HP mariner? Thanks in advance....

Well here's what I have gathered hope it will do.

Should be. Two stroke motors get the 'lub' from the oil mixed in with the fuel. But the lower unit have to use a gear oil. You need a marine lower unit gear oil. You will look for two larger headed screws in the lower unit that you can remove. One towards the bottom for draining, and one about 1/2 way up for refilling. They might even have words like 'Fill' and 'Drain' near them.

When you take them out and drain the old gear lub out, verify it is not milky. If so, then you have a seal leaking somewhere and that will need to be fixed (and if it has been that way for a while there might be other damage inside from the less capable lubrication).

Good luck!
