I am sorry if I possibly upset some people here, however, I have a question I have not been able to find the answer to and it is frustrating to me.
I am a beginner at sailing and have taken Basic Keelboat ASA 101 and ASA 103 courses and will soon take the ASA 104 course.
All of those courses require instruction on the boat and I can understand why they cost as much as they do. Although some schools charge outrageously more than others.
From what I see, the ASA 105 Course (Coastal Navigation Standard) is all book work and studying.
Granted, for some people they would learn much easier and quicker in a classroom, however, this is not required.
I can see paying to take the test. However, I don't see the reason to charge $200+ for materials and then charge $200+ to take the test. In some cases, I have seen $300-400 for the course materials and then $400 for the test.
If it were $200 to take the test then great! (Although, I think it should cost around $150).
Shouldn't this be more like computer certifications? Buy the book.. study.. then take the test for a price. If you fail, then pay to take it again.
And to everyone out there, I understand the test is at least 3 hours long and can take longer. So I understand having to pay the cost of the person administering the test.
To sum this up... For myself, having a math/physics/scientific background and also being used to studying and classes, I just don't understand why the cost is so high for something that can be learned at home.
Note: I am self taught at PHP, MySQL,Javascript,HTML,CSS,JAVA,ASP.NET, C#,C++, Google Android, Spanish.
Thanks to anyone for some input on this. Remember I am a beginner so I might be just a bit naive.
