Cruising Preparations
How you prepare for a Cruising trip depends on your purpose and how long will your voyage be. Whether it is a cruise for a few days or a long one, it is always crucial to plan and make the necessary preparations. You need to make sure that all equipment are working properly to avoid having problems afloat due to equipment failure. This and many other factors should be taken into account before going on board.
Know the various things to consider in preparing for a cruise:
- Plan the trip.
Keep in mind that weather changes constantly, so make sure that you and the rest of the crew are ready for anything.
Tell someone ashore of your plans - where will you be setting sail and when you expect to get back.
- Make a checklist.
Ensure that you have everything you need on board. Tip: Having a check list will make ocular inspection easier and more orderly.
- Check the Rig (Sails, Standing Rigging, Running Rigging, etc.) for signs of wear and tear. Run repairs when necessary.
- Take a look at the engine and make sure that it is in good working condition.
- Make sure that the flares, fire extinguisher, medicines in your First Aid Kit, etc. are within their use-by date.
- Navigation Tools and Communication Devices should be in good working order.
- Have sufficient spare batteries and bulbs as well as replacements for engine parts.
- A briefing should be done before getting on board.
If you are the skipper, make sure to tell your crew members about the plan. Have a briefing about the different systems of the Cruising Sailboat. These include:
- run down of the different parts of the boat
- Life Jacket and Safety Harness for each crew member
- proper use of Communication Devices
- location and proper use of Safety Equipment, Tool Kit, and First Aid Kit
- when and how to use devices in sending Distress Signals (i.e. radio usage and protocol in making a distress call)
If you are a crew member, make sure to pay attention to the skipper's instructions. Know the task/s assigned to you and coordinate with the rest of the crew. Moreover, let him know if you have any health concerns or if you are susceptible to Seasickness.
Another aspect to consider is storage space and the proper way to secure equipment and things. Make sure that gear and other stuff are stored securely.
Like in any Outdoor Activity, planning and preparation are two important aspects. Sailors should keep in mind that without a plan, the journey will be unsuccessful. Make the necessary planning and preparation in order to have a safe and fun venture afloat.
