Ice Sailing

Ice Sailing During winter, when the lakes and other bodies of water turn to rock-hard ice, Sailing enthusiasts can still go aboard and have a great Sailing experience, only this time, in an icy surface. This is called Ice Sailing, a sport that has become very popular in the Netherlands, Argentina, Canada, Norway, Poland, Germany, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom. These countries offer outstanding icy conditions suitable for the activity.

Also called Ice Boating, Ice Yachting, Ice Surfing and sometimes ‘Hard Water’ Sailing, Ice Sailing dates back in the 1800’s when the Dutch used it as a convenient way of transporting goods across lakes during winter. Later on, it became a popular form of recreation in the United States. As Ice Sailing became widespread, different kinds of vessels were designed and tested. In the 1930’s, the Detroit News held a competition and the DN ice boat was introduced. It is currently the most popular boat design used in Ice Sailing.

Equipment
In Ice Sailing, you need an iceboat or ice yacht, helmet, protective padding, layers of clothing, life vest, crampons, and boots.

  • An Iceboat is characterized by its runners which are fastened to the boat to run over the ice. This type is usually one-seater, other models can accommodate more.
  • Ice Sailing can be done not only as an activity for pleasure but also for racing. Whatever the case may be, it is crucial to wear the necessary pieces of safety equipment so you can avoid or minimize the risks of getting injured. Wear a snug helmet and protective padding such as elbow and knee pads.
  • In an environment where you are surrounded by ice, you obviously need to protect yourself from Hypothermia and keep yourself warm and dry while sailing. Dress in layers and wear a life vest for added security and padding. In addition, you need a pair of spiked shoes or creepers or crampons on your winter boots so you will not slip while walking on ice.
Safety Tips
  • Check the area. Ask the locals if there are potential hazards so you can stay away from them.
  • Make sure you have ‘bear claws’ or safety ice picks. These are indispensable pieces of safety equipment which will help you in climbing out of the water and into the icy surface.
  • Be responsible. Follow the established rules of the road so you can avoid collisions at all times.
  • Sailing alone is definitely a no-no.
  • Ice Sailing requires 6 inches of ice (minimum thickness). Take note, though, that there may be areas of thin ice which can be a hazard.

Ice Sailing continues to satisfy the need for speed of hundreds of enthusiasts from around the world. Exhilarating and challenging as it may be, just bear in mind that it is also a hazardous activity. Take all the necessary precautions so you will have a safe and fun Ice Sailing adventure.
