Sailboat Racing - Getting Started

• Join a Sailing club.
  Meet other Sailing fans and improve your skills by joining a club which is dedicated to the sort of Sailing that you do. You can be a participant of club racing. Refine your skills and tactics and you can eventually progress to other competitions.

At a local level, races are organized by clubs, while class associations arrange the national events.

Though being a member of a club or association is beneficial, you can still try racing even though you are not a member of any club. It is not necessary to join one just so you participate in any event. This is not the only way to experience the wonders of Sailboat Racing.


• Interact with people who are into Sailboat Racing.
  If you are not a member of a club, you can still participate in a race by getting in touch with club members. In this way, you will be informed about the schedule of events. You might also get a crewing position if you do not have your own Sailboat.
  
  Contact a Sailing association in your area. Its personnel will be able to give you relevant information such as contact details of racers who may be interested in including you onboard.



• Get listed in a crew list.
  You can find crew lists in clubs and in some Sailing websites. Just add your name and other information in the list. Many racing sailors are in need of regular crew, so add your name in the list and you might just get a crewing position.



• Take racing classes.
  A good racing school will give you a solid foundation of the skills required in racing. Moreover, it will make you more confident and prepared and you may also get a chance to meet other racing sailors who can give you some guidelines and pointers that they learned from their racing experiences.
