Regattas


Regattas A Regatta is often held for a number of reasons, but oftentimes, these are organized in commemoration of historical events, in honor of certain persons, in celebration of feasts, for interscholastic competition, or for simple promotion of the place where the Regatta has taken place. Due to the social and promotional nature of Regattas, every month of the calendar year is filled with these boating races from numerous countries and locations. North America, Europe, and Australia are known to have the most number of rowing, Sailing, or yacht racing events. The most popular of these onshore events are the following:
  • Henley Royal Regatta
    Held annually on River Thames, England, the Henley Regatta is regarded as one of the largest and most popular Regattas in the world. First held in 1839, the Henley Regatta was primarily organized by the mayor and people of Henley for the purpose of promoting the town and setting up a public attraction. The 5-day Regatta is held every first weekend of July, and interestingly has its own set of rules and organization.


  • Cowes Week
    The longest running Regatta in the world, the Cowes Week, now more commonly known as the Skandia Cowes Week, runs at the beginning of August since 1826. The event is held at Solent, which includes onshore events as well as attractions, parties and concerts.


  • Regatta on the Grand Canal
    Also called Regata Storica, the Regatta on the Grand Canal started during the 14th century as an annual carnival event. Held in Venice, Italy, this Regatta is a Sailing competition between Venetian boats in commemoration of the abdication of Queen of Cyprus Catherine Cornaro in 1489.


  • Royal Hobart Regatta
    Identified as Tasmania’s oldest sporting event, the Royal Hobart Regatta is a three-day event and is held annually in Hobart, Tasmania in Australia. Then Governor of Tasmania Sir John Franklin first organized the event where the competition consisted of local sailors and merchant navy men.


  • Whitby Regatta
    Annually held for 168 years, the Whitby Regatta is considered as the oldest Regatta in England. Whitby is located on the northeast coast of England, North Yorkshire. Initially a rowing competition, the event takes place from August 2 - 4t, with various water competitions aside from the grand fair, fireworks and police and military displays.


  • Phuket King’s Club Regatta
    One of the well-known and distinguished Regattas in Asia, the Phuket King’s Club Regatta was first held in 1987 in celebration of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60th birthday. This social event is held every year during the month of December at the Kata Beach in Phuket, Thailand. Due to its increased attention in the world yachting scene, the Sailing Regatta was recently named Yachting Event of the Year in 2006 at the Christofle Asia Boating Awards.

Events such as these have brought out the spirit of friendship, camaraderie, competitiveness and showmanship. These Regattas have remained under the international limelight, continuously attracting competitors, boating enthusiasts, and visitors from different parts of the world.
