Sailing Safety - Tools & Equipment
Staying safe can ensure a fun and exciting time in the water. Sailing Gear includes the different tools and pieces of equipment that can keep you out of danger and help you in times of emergencies.
In this section, know the necessary Safety Tools and Equipment in Sailing:
- Personal Flotation Devices (PFD)
Life vest or jacket is designed to keep one floating in the water. It comes in a variety of styles, sizes, and shapes. Take note that each person should have an approved PFD. Life Jackets should be kept in easily reached spaces.
There are many types of Life Jackets. It would be much better if your PFD comes with a Safety Harness. When sailing at night, there is a type of Life Jacket with an automatic light and is activated in water.
- Safety Harnesses
Good Safety Harnesses are those which have adjustable straps to give a comfortable fit. Find one with a crotch strap to hold the Safety Harness down.
- Lifebuoys
A Lifebuoy is used when someone goes overboard. A Danbuoy is a floating marker with a code flag O at the top which indicates that someone fell overboard. This can also be attached on a Lifebuoy to make the latter a more efficient signal. When sailing at night, a Lifebuoy will be effective if it is fitted with a strobe light.
- Distress Signals
There are many tools or devices that you can use in case of emergencies. Some of these are the radio, different types of flares, and other visual and sound signals. Visit our Distress Signals section for more details.
- Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are necessary in preventing a fire or dealing with it. They should be situated in conspicuous places and away from flammable substances. As an additional safety measure, know the possible causes of fire so you will be able to minimize the risks.
- First Aid Kits
The type of Sailing you do can be used as indicator of how simple or comprehensive your First Aid Kit should be. In general, you need a First Aid Kit with a relatively wide range of medication and an assortment of plasters, bandages, and other supplies, especially if you are in a long-distance cruise. A basic First Aid Training and a comprehensive kit can give you some peace of mind that you can deal with injuries and other health concerns while on board until medical assistance is available. Check our First Aid Kits - Essential Components section for additional information.
These are the basic Safety Tools and Equipment. Keep in mind that safety is a matter of importance in Sailing. Make sure you have the necessary equipment on board that will help you in times of trouble or emergencies.
