Sailboat Parts - Sail
A Sail is a large, strong fabric that catches the Wind. This is the force that propels the Sailboat through the water.
- Head - the topmost corner of a triangular sail
- Mainsail - usually the largest Sail; provides most of the Sailboat's power
- Headsail - sail flown and set forward of the Mast
- Jib - triangle-shaped headsail
- Leech - aft edge of sail
- Luff - forward edge of the sail
- Tack - lower point or corner of the forward edge of the sail
- Clew - lower point or corner of the aft edge of the sail
- Foot - lowest edge of the sail
These are the parts of a typical Sail. Keep in mind that there are many types of Sail, and they may have more parts and features.
