Sailing Gear - Communication Devices
The process of conveying and receiving messages is everywhere, everytime. It has become an integral part of everyone's lives. With the aid of modern technology, various Communication Devices were created to make communicating with others faster and much more convenient.
Communication Devices are very important in the world of Sailing. Especially if you are in long-distance voyages, you will be so grateful for the invention of VHF Radio, computers, and satellite communication systems. You can get in touch with other sailors, as well as your family and friends.
The Communication Devices are also part of safety measures. Keep in mind that safety should always be a priority so it is very crucial to have a convenient and fast means of communication in case of problems or if you need immediate assistance while onboard.
In this section, know the different Communication Devices that you can use afloat:
- VHF Radio
You should have a Very High Frequency (VHF) Radio on your Sailboat. This is a very valuable and reliable two-way radio which provides clear communication through line-of-sight. This means that the signal is sent and received through a straight line. A VHF Radio is monitored 24 hours a day.
Use it primarily to seek assistance in case of emergencies or problems, but you can also use it for matters such as to communicate to others on the coast and to be in touch with people in other vessels. Keep in mind that a VHF Radio is a safety and communication device so learn how to use it properly. Avoid sending unnecessary messages.
The word MAYDAY is the internationally recognized Distress Signal via radio. All sailors should know the right way of sending a Distress Signal if the situation calls for it.
Here is an example:
- Tune your VHF Radio to channel 16 (this is the hailing and distress channel).
- Say the word MAYDAY three times.
- Say the name of the Sailboat three times.
- Give important information that will help in locating the boat in distress at the shortest possible time.
- Say what kind of distress or emergency the boat has.
- Say the kind of help that is required.
- Give other relevant information about the boat in distress such as the number of persons on board.
- Say the word 'over' when you are done.
Keep in mind that this should be done only in times of distress. Moreover, it is crucial that you do it properly.
- SSB Radio
Single Sideband (SSB) Radios can operate in High Frequency (HF) and Medium Frequency (MF) bands. An SSB Radio can provide long-range communication with a transmission range of 6000 miles. It can have different features, depending on the model.
- Mobile phone
A cell phone is a necessary communication gadget if you want to stay in touch with your family and friends. Having a mobile phone is an easy way of communicating with other people while onboard.
- Computer
Sending electronic mails is another option of communicating to the rest of the world. There are many devices that you can use to have internet connection. If you are within a cellular phone network, you can use a cell phone connection. Some have large satellite domes attached to the rigging. Other ways that enable you to send and retrieve E-mails are connections on the shore such as landline connections and internet cafés.
These are some of the Communication Devices used in Sailing. The kinds of devices you use depend on various factors such as the length of time you will be spending onboard, where your destination is, and of course, your budget on these gadgets.
