Sailing History

Sailing History Before Sailing became a form of recreation and way of life as we know it today, Sailing ships have long been used in trade, transportation, and exploration by powerful seafaring nations. For a very long time, people depended on Sailboats in traveling long distances. Many countries came up with different innovations when it comes to building boats that could carry people and cargo. European countries made use of boats with square-sail rigs, while China had come up with a classic junk or junk rig. Also referred to as the Chinese lugsail, this has a short Mast and bamboo battens which support the Sails.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Sailing ships were still used primarily for trade and as a means of transportation. As the leading country in the field of seafaring, the Netherlands had exchanged dealings not only in Europe but also in Africa and even in the Far East.

In the 17th century, Sailing ships were also used for enjoyment. Sailing or Yachting as a form of recreation originated in the Netherlands. In fact, the word "yacht" comes from the Dutch word jaghen which means 'ship for chasing'. The sport of Sailing was introduced in England by Charles II, and then the concept of Sailing for pleasure started to spread and reach America.

In 1720, the world's first yacht club, The Water Club of Cork, was formed in Cork, Ireland. In 1844, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was formed in the United States. It was the first club in the US and is considered as the oldest running yacht club in the country. Aboard the vessel America in 1851, NYYC members had a race against the British sailors around the Isle of Wight in England. The US sailors won and it became known as the America's Cup.

More and more people are discovering the wonders of Sailing. With the aid of technology, manufacturers are coming up with different Sailboat Types to meet the demands of enthusiasts. Sailing is so fun and rewarding that it is popular to people of all ages. It is a 'fun for all' kind of Outdoor Activity. Furthermore, it is a very good opportunity to learn a lot and still have fun. As time progresses, Sailboats undergo a lot of developments so people can explore more and have a fun and exciting experience afloat.
