Sailing Gear - Sailing Paraphernalia
There are other tools which are necessary in Sailing. These Sailing Paraphernalia are useful onboard - for safety and 'added help'.
In this section, know the different Sailing Paraphernalia used onboard:
Sailing Knife
A Rigging Knife is essential for sailors and yachtsmen. It should be sharp enough and designed to cut Sailing Lines (ropes).
There are many kinds of knives which cater the needs of sailors. As an example, there are Rigging Knives that have a fixed blade, while others have a folding type of blade. In buying a Rigging Knife, make sure that it is made of high-quality stainless steel.
Binoculars
This tool is usually used in overnight cruising and longer trips. Binoculars are useful in Navigation, eyeing other Sailboats to avoid collisions, and other situations.
Strobe Light
This produces a very visible light once activated. It is better if your Life Jacket has a strobe light attached to it. This is for easier detection of someone who is swept overboard when sailing at night.
Flashlight
You will find this very useful when sailing at night. Have spare batteries for your flashlight especially when you are in long-distance cruises.
Tool Kit
Be capable and prepared when something needs to be repaired. A set of basic tools will be very effective for this purpose. Just like in the case of First Aid Kits, the items in your tool kit can be customized. It generally depends on the Sailing Variation that you do, how far your destination is, and how long you will be onboard. To give you an idea, here are some items in a basic tool kit:
- Pliers
- Screwdrivers and Screwdriver bits
- Hammer
- Wood saw
- Wire cutters
- Files
- Spanners
- Sockets
This list is not inclusive. Again, you can customize the items and supplies in your tool kit depending on your needs.
These are the basic Sailing Paraphernalia. Consider the Sailing Variation that you do and how long you will be in the water. You may bring more tools that you will probably need onboard.
