Storm Knocks Four Yachts off Velux 5 Oceans Race
WEDNESDAY, 25 OCTOBER 2006
The Velux 5 Oceans Race competitors who had set-off last Sunday at Bilboa, Spain have faced a violent storm while heading for Cape Finistere in north Spain. The storm knocked four of the six yachts off the race.
Only Bernard Stamm and Koji Shiraishi, last year's winners, have survived the storm and are continuing with the race. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to solely circumnavigate the earth non-stop, reported that his boat had been rolled. The Velux 5 Oceans Race is the first solo race Knox-Johnston has joined after 37 years at age 67. Pre-race favorite Mike Golding, on the other hand, had docked in La Coruna for repairs on his mainsail.
The Velux 5 Oceans race is the longest and toughest solo race, covering 30,000 miles. The remaining sailors are bound to Fremantle in Western Australia, and they would have to battle more challenging sea and weather conditions.
