Thompson, Golding Rejoins Velux 5 Oceans Race

FRIDAY, 27 OCTOBER 2006

Alex Thomson and Mike Golding are back in the Velux 5 Oceans Race, the longest and toughest solo race, covering 30,000 miles from Bilbao, Spain to Fremantle, Australia.

The first 36 hours of the Velux 5 Oceans Race had the competitors face a violent storm that has knocked off four of them from the race. Only Bernard Stamm and Koji Shiraishi have survived the storm. Stamm now heads the fleet, while Shiraichi follows at over 150 miles behind.

Golding and Thomson joined again the race yesterday. Golding restarted at the first leg of the race in La Coruņa. Unai Basurko de Miguel and Graham Dalton, on the other hand, will rejoin the race today. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, however, still has his boat under repair.
