THURSDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2007
Sailing teams from China and Croatia have entered the BACARDI Cup Star Class Regatta for the first time in the regatta's 80-year history.
Meanwhile, Star Class World Champions and Olympic Medalists from 19 countries have already registered for the six-day race series including 2004 winner Alfonso Domingos of Portugal, Mark Reynolds of USA, Peter Bromby of Bermuda, and John Dane and Austin Sperry from Mississippi. "We expect to see some strong competition on Biscayne Bay as many of these teams are vying for 2008 Beijing Olympic slots in their respective countries," said Craig Prandini, event chairman.
"Besides the appeal of Florida's warm winter waters, there is nothing quite like the BACARDI Cup where seasoned of amateurs can enter the regatta and test their skills against the best Star Class sailors in the world," Prandini said. The regatta originated in Havana, Cuba in 1927. Twenty-two foot Star class sloops are used by the teams during the race.
