Galway, Volvo Ocean Race 08-09 Stop-Over
THURSDAY, 24 MAY 2007
The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009, which is also known as the Round the World Race, will be stopping over at Galway in Ireland.
A group of Galway businessman who called themselves as "Let's do it Ireland" has made the original bid in February this year. They are now creating a team and commissioning a boat for the race. Mr. John Killeen, Chairman of Let's do it Ireland, said that the race will not only benefit Galway as a whole, but it will also help in the development of the port's infrastructure.
The Volvo Ocean Race, which will start in Alicante, Spain, will cover 39,000 miles in nine months. Ten ports will be visited around the world, which include Kochi, India and Boston, Massachusetts in the USA. Ten teams are expected to compete. Two teams from Spain have confirmed last week, joining the Mean Machine from the Netherlands, Ericsson from Sweden and PUMA from the United States.
