Big Boat Sailing Program for Juniors
WEDNESDAY, 27 JUNE 2007
Is sailing really losing its charm among the youth of today?
According to Jim Lubeck, former Commodore at Bridgeport’s Black Rock Yacht Club, the youth nowadays are getting much more involved in sports such as soccer and lacrosse. He supposed that the primary reason for this is that local youth find it more cool and exciting to be part of a team than waving a white flag and buoying over the body of water. Lubeck didn’t want this trend to go on for a long time so he came up with an idea that would lure back the youngsters today into sailing. And that was the birth of the Junior Big Boat Sailing program.
"The goal of the Junior Big Boat Sailing program was to keep the kids involved with sailing after they were done with junior sailing," Lubeck said.
To make it a real team effort, Lubeck proposed the size of the boats to be approximately 37 to 44 feet in length, with over 10 people as part of the sailing team. This idea of Lubeck reach Bridgeport and that gave him an idea of making the program a national project for U.S. Sailing.
Just last year, Lubeck led the introduction of the Black Rock Yacht Club’s program, which primarily aims to bring back the interest of the young athletes to sailing. The activity’s chairman, Jeff Morrison loved the whole idea and perfectly understood the importance of sailing in a young person’s evolution.
"After the dingy program, there was no way for young people to really continue sailing," Morrison said. "The program serves as an introduction to the bigger boats and helps further what may be a lifelong love of sailing."
