THURSDAY, 28 JUNE 2007
It seems like the local officials of London are really giddy for the London 2012 Olympics as plans for the forthcoming sports event have already been laid down and approved as early as now.
For one, the plan for the sailing facilities in Weymouth and Portland has already been approved and organizers are already in the process of carrying out the plan. As host of the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing events for the Olympic Games, the organizers settled on doing some regeneration at the Osprey Quay as part of the preparation for the big sports event in 2012. Together with the Portland National Sailing Academy, the Osprey Quay will be redeveloped, and as part of the plan, will now have a permanent slipway, more race-boat parking, and mooring facilities.
The developers of the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), Dean & Reddyhoff, also submitted their plans for a new 560-berth commercial marina for the Osprey Quay wherein 250 berths will be used during the 2012 games.
According to Olympic Delivery Authority Director of Property, Ralph Luck, the approval of the securing planning is an important step towards delivering world-class sailing facilities that is sure to benefit the elite and local community athletes.
“Our plans for Weymouth and Portland are an excellent example of how the Games can act as a driver for wider regeneration, spreading sporting, social and economic benefits around the country,” Luck adds.
