THURSDAY, 26 JULY 2007
Twenty-seven-year-old Russell Streeter will represent Barbados at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. It is said to be one of the world's biggest event next year.
Since the age of nine Russel had already piloted various sail-crafts. In 2005, he decided to take his country to the highest level of the sport, sailing in the Laser Class. He had moved to England to train with and compete against the best and the brightest in the world's competition sailing circles. According to him the best people in the word of sailing are in England because it has the most international events, the best attended events and the best funded campaigns.
He recently competed at the International Sailing Federation's World Sailing Championship in Portugal which is one of the qualification event for the coming Olympic Games. After placing 57th in the Portugal qualifier, Streeter acknowledged that significant ground needs to be covered in order to maximise his chances of securing one of the remaining spots in the 2008 Olympic Regatta, with the second and final qualifying event scheduled for February next year.
