Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Season Opening Day
FRIDAY, 31 AUGUST 2007
This Saturday 1 September marks an important day in history for the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) with the Opening Day ceremony of the 123rd Sailing Season. Back in 1885 the very first opening ceremony was held with keen sailors competing in the inaugural Opening Day Regatta.
Some 122 years later the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron celebrates the Opening Day in style with the 2007 Guest of Honour, General Peter Cosgrove AC, MC, launching the sailors of the Squadron into another year of sailing on Waterloo Bay.
This year the Ceremony will also farewell the seven young sailors who will be traveling to the 2007 ISAF World Team Racing Championships in Valencia, Spain. Also heading to Spain are the enthusiastic Laser Masters Fleet with over ten representing the Squadron at this prestigious event.
Following the Ceremony, Manly Boat Harbour will come alive with a flotilla of yachts, powerboats and dinghies as the traditional Sailpast as Salute is taken by General Cosgrove and Commodore of RQYS, Kevin Miller.
In the afternoon the Southern and Northern course fleets, including Lasers, Sabots, Contenders, Skiffs and Off-the-Beach Catamarans, will sail their first Squadron Championship races of the season. The Division Yachting fleet will sail the traditional Opening Day Course taking the sailors in and around both Waterloo and Moreton Bay.
The 123rd Opening Day Ceremony also launches the new and improved 24 Hour Fuel Facility and VIP Marina Jetty directly in front of the Club House in Manly Harbour. The state-of-the-art system will showcase the style of the 146 new marina berths that will soon be added to the current 464 that already make up the marina of the Squadron.
Commodore Kevin Miller stated, "The Opening Day celebrations and Opening Day Regatta, to be highlighted this year, will no doubt be an exciting and enjoyable day for all members and their guests".
