King Harbor YC Won U.S. Match Racing Championship
MONDAY, 24 SEPTEMBER 2007
The King Harbor Yacht Club team of Brian Angel (Manhattan Beach, Calf.), Payson Infelise (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Michael Delanty (Redondo Beach, Calif.) were crowned winners of the U.S. Match Racing Championship for the Prince of Wales Bowl today, after four days of racing in Sonars off Newport (R.I.).
The Finals of this national championship—hosted by New York Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., Rosetta Stone and Dry Creek Vineyard—echoed the Final battle of last year's event: Angel once again faced Pequot Yacht Club skipper Dave Perry (Southport, Conn.), the same formidable sailor he faced in 2006. Last year, Perry and his crew triumphed; Angel found the battle this year to be tougher—but he also found his edge.
Perry and his crew lead in the fourth race; but in a jibing duel on the final downwind leg, Angel passed Perry—and he kept that lead until the finish to log a 3-1 record in the Finals and capture this national title for King Harbor YC for a second time.
As winner of this championship, an ISAF Grade 3 event, Angel also earns invitations to the 2008 Knickerbocker Cup (ISAF Grade 2) and the 2008 Ficker Cup (ISAF Grade 3).
