THURSDAY, 25 OCTOBER 2007
Following the release of the ISAF World Match Race Rankings, the top 10 women skippers have been invited to compete in the 2008 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship.
The race will be contested in Auckland, New Zealand from April 1-6, 2008. Fourteen skippers will fight for the World Championship Trophy.
Defending champion Claire Leroy (FRA) receives an automatic invite to defend her title. With her occupying the number one spot, the world number 11 spot also receives an invite, together with the number 10.
Along with Leroy, the invited skippers also include former World champions Sally Barkow (USA) and Liz Baylis (USA), as well as Lotte Meldgaard Pedersen (DEN), Katie Spithill (AUS) abd Linda Rahm (SWE), all World championship medalists.
In case an invited skipper fails to attend, the invitation will be transferred to the next highest ranked sailor from the rankings of October 24.
Two qualifying events, namely, the ISAF Grade 2 CYCA Harken Women’s Race in Sydney and the ISAF Grade 3 New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Championships, present further opportunities for skippers to join the elite women’s match racing world. In addition to this is one wildcard entry.
