Israeli Team to Compete in Tasmania Race 2008
THURSDAY, 22 NOVEMBER 2007
An Israeli team, led by naval officer Alon Peled, intends to make a challenge in the Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race in 2008.
The team, composed of three sailors and two runners, have competed in the two United Kingdom races, the Scottish Islands Peaks Race in 2006 and the Barmouth to Fort William Yacht Race in 2004. Next year, they will race in Tasmania to complete the Three Peaks Race circuit.
The members are all officers in the Israeli Navy and are regular sailors in various regattas throughout Europe. Though all of them have yacht skipper certification, they are very eager to arrive in Tasmania in time to familiarize themselves with the three running legs at Mt. Strzelecki, Mt. Freycinet and Mt. Wellington.
Race Director Alastair Douglas says that this is the first time that a team from Israel has challenged.
"This team will add an exciting element to the 20th race," he says.
The team has worked hard over the past seven months to find a suitable Australian yacht to charter and now seems to have secured a fast trimaran located in South Australia.
