ING Insurance - Title Sponsor of CYA Sailing Event

MONDAY, 25 FEBRUARY 2008

HALIFAX /CNW/ - Athlete development for the sport of sailing has received a big lift. Organizers of the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA)'s youth sailing championships in 2008 have signed ING Insurance as the title sponsor for the national event.

The ING CYA Youth National Sailing Championships will take place at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (RNSYS) in Halifax in August. More than 200 athletes from across the country, representing the best young sailors in Canada, will compete on the waters of Halifax Harbour in seven classes, including Laser, Laser Radial, Laser4.7, Byte CII, 29er, and the Club 420.

"With ING Insurance's support, these national championships will provide the high calibre of coaching and competition so necessary in the development of our young athletes," says Mike Archibald, chairman of the regatta organizing committee. "Corporate support is critical to the success of such national competitions and we are thankful to ING Insurance for its commitment to our sport and our young athletes."

In addition to the regatta which runs from August 9th to the 12th, an important component of the event is a two-day training programme for all athletes of the competition. This Youth Olympic Training Seminar (YOTS) will bring together top coaches and members of the Canadian Sailing Team to provide valuable training to young athletes who may not normally be exposed to such high calibre coaching. YOTS is an integral component of athlete development for the sport of sailing. While the Canadian championship places emphasis on high performance youth, it also has an element of development and is the first major regatta for many young athletes.

The ING CYA Youth National Sailing Championships is also a qualifier event for CYA's 2009 National Youth Sailing Team. Members of this team are recognized as Canada's next generation Olympic athletes. Their campaigns may qualify them to represent Canada at next year's World Youth Sailing Championships.

"In addition to caring for our clients, our commitment extends to the communities across the country where we do business," says Alan Blair, Senior Vice President, Atlantic Canada of ING Insurance. "ING strives to support organizations and projects that inspire inventiveness and independence in Canada's youth. We encourage endeavors that aim to mentor tomorrow's leaders, and we believe national sports competition, such as the ING CYA Youth National Sailing Championships, does just that."
