Qingdao, China Remains Pit Stop of Fleet Race
WEDNESDAY, 27 FEBRUARY 2008
Qingdao remains a stop in China for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race over the next four years. This was confirmed after the Qingdao municipal government signed an agreement with the Clipper Ventures PLC to keep their contract for the 09-10 and 11-12 races. Clipper Ventures PLC is the organizer of the premium international sailing event.
Qingdao Mayor Xia Geng has welcomed the opportunity given to the municipality to be known as the "sailing city". In the countdown to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Xia believes the Clipper Race will help them showcase the coastal city in East China's Shandong province to the world. He says the Shandong province can be considered as an elite aquatic sports center that has an ability to host world-class sailing events.
The Clipper Race fleet will make its stop in Qingdao for 10 days. During this time, Xia says the media coverage and exposure to the city will not only bring Qingdao to the world stage but also to the world-class sailing competitions.
